Static Pressure and Duct Diagnostics
Measuring total external static pressure and using it to find where a duct system is choking.
Safety
What it is
Static pressure is the pressure the air exerts on the walls of the duct. Total external static pressure is the sum of the pressure the blower must overcome outside the equipment cabinet. It is the blood pressure reading of an air system.
Total external static pressure = supply static + absolute value of return staticMeasured in inches of water column, with probes located outside the cabinet as the manufacturer specifies.
Why it matters
Most residential equipment is rated near 0.5 inches of water column. Real systems frequently measure far higher, which cuts airflow, reduces capacity, raises energy use and shortens blower and compressor life. A high reading turns a vague complaint into a measurable problem.
Taking the readings
- 1Set the system to the highest airflow mode it will normally run.
- 2Drill or use existing test ports in the supply plenum after the cabinet and in the return before the cabinet, outside the coil and filter where the manufacturer specifies.
- 3Measure supply static and return static with a manometer.
- 4Add the two absolute values to get total external static pressure.
- 5Compare against the manufacturer blower table and look up the resulting airflow.
- 6Take pressure drop readings across the filter and coil to see which component is responsible.
- 7Plug the test holes when finished.
| Where the drop is | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Across the filter | Restrictive or loaded filter, or a filter grille far too small |
| Across the coil | Dirty coil, or a coil undersized for the airflow |
| Return side high | Undersized return, too few returns, closed doors, crushed flex |
| Supply side high | Undersized trunk, excessive fittings, closed dampers, kinked flex runs |
Tools involved
- Digital manometer with static pressure tips
- Drill and test port plugs
- Manufacturer blower performance table
