Single Stage, Two Stage and Variable Capacity

How staged and modulating equipment differs from single stage, and what that means for comfort and setup.

What it is

Single stage equipment is either on at full capacity or off. Two stage equipment has a reduced capacity first stage and a full capacity second stage. Variable capacity equipment modulates continuously between a minimum and maximum output.

Why it matters

Buildings spend most of the season at part load. Equipment that can run longer at lower output holds temperature more evenly, removes more moisture in cooling, moves air more quietly and avoids the swings of repeated on and off cycles.

TypeRuntime behaviourDehumidificationTypical control
Single stageShort cycles at part loadAdequate when correctly sizedTwo wire heat, single Y for cooling
Two stageLonger low stage runsBetterSecond stage wire or a timer in the thermostat
Variable capacityNearly continuous at low outputBestCommunicating or modulating control

How it works

Two stage gas furnaces use a two stage gas valve and a matched blower speed for each stage. Two stage compressors either unload internally or use a second compressor. Variable capacity systems use an inverter driven compressor and a variable speed blower coordinated by the control.

Staging strategy is set either by the thermostat, by the equipment control, or by a communicating system that decides based on demand and outdoor temperature. Which device is in charge affects how you set the system up and how you troubleshoot it.

Setup mistakes

  • Wiring a two stage system as single stage, so the equipment always runs at full capacity.
  • Leaving default dip switch settings that do not match the installed duct system.
  • Using a non communicating thermostat with communicating equipment.
  • Setting staging times so short that the system jumps to full capacity immediately.

Verify airflow in every stage

Each stage has its own airflow target. Measure temperature rise or split in each stage rather than assuming the factory settings match the duct system.
