NFPA 54 standard method for buildings of ordinary tightness. Canadian installations follow CSA B149.1. This does not replace code compliance or manufacturer instructions.
Formula
- Required volume = 50 ft³ × (total input ÷ 1,000)
Example calculation
100,000 BTU/h total → 5,000 ft³ required.
Practical HVAC use
Spotting rooms that likely need outdoor combustion air.
Common mistakes
- Counting volume of spaces not freely connected.
- Applying the US method where CSA B149.1 governs.
